TEACHING AND LEARNING
During ten weeks we will look together at the portrayal and recording of historical events and everyday life in the European Middle Ages, both in art, including illuminated manuscripts, paintings and tapestries, and in contemporary texts. The aim of the course is to provide a better understanding of late medieval society and culture. The group is very relaxed and informal, and having no prior knowledge of either art history or medieval history is no barrier to coming along and enjoying beautiful art and literature while learning something new. Enthusiasm is the main requirement!

COURSE TEXTS
Hall, J., Dictionary of Subjects and Symbols in Art (London, 1974) is an excellent reference book for imagery.
Gombrich, E. H., The Story of Art (many editions) is a classic text and provides useful and interesting background reading and reference.

Images are taken from the Web Gallery of Art image collection and virtual museum and my own photographic collection.

You are welcome to bring your ipad!
